Experience the intensity and physicality of LP. It’s Cardboard Sessions #13.
April 25, 2023
When you have a gift, give it away.
Born Laura Pergolizzi, LP is emotion incarnate. And she’s no stranger to sharing those feelings far and wide. Her aesthetic has been adopted by pop culture, with anthems synched to shows such as Empire and Orange is the New Black. She’s shared her gift of lyricism by penning hits for the likes of Cher, Rihanna, Celine Dion and Christina Aguilera. And she’s shared the vaunted ranks of rock royalty, being compared to the likes of Joan Jet and Feist.
Small in stature. Immensely moving.
Do not be fooled by the 5’3”, 100 lbs of her. Close your eyes and listen. Born Italian in NYC to an operatically trained mother, LP is passion by blood and NYC by nature. When that red phosphorous is struck by a note, a chord or a wail, you’re experiencing the true vocal fire unmatched by any female artist today. Her roots taught her well, to treat her voice as the most prized of instruments. And in that wail, you can feel the longing to return home.
To name it is to tame it, so let’s keep it open.
As LP forged her own path as an artist, it was readily apparent no one was going to box her in. Dropped by a big label, she traveled on undaunted to carve a path that was entirely her own. A self-described arena folk-rocker, we were fortunate enough to witness her on an eminently smaller stage. There’s no better artist than one who refuses to be defined, and none better than our indescribable paper instruments to play backup. Welcome to Sessions #13. And welcome to the poetry, heartbreak and redemption that is LP. Check out the full in-studio session, here.
